A Davenport attorney has been given three years of probation for his role in a fraudulent mortgage scheme.

A news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Nicholas Klinefeldt says 57-year-old Paul Bieber was sentenced on Wednesday. Bieber also was ordered to pay restitution of nearly $38,000. Bieber had pleaded guilty to misprision of felony, which means he knew about the crime but didn't report it.

Prosecutors say Bieber was retained to represent the owner of a Davenport house that was sold for an inflated price so cash could be fraudulently diverted. Six other people have been convicted in the scheme, including two former mortgage brokers.
