Jury selection is under way in the trial of a man charged in the 2009 slaying of an Iowa City landlord who police say was shot during a robbery gone awry.
Nineteen-year-old Charles Thompson is charged with first-degree
murder in the death of 64-year-old John Versypt. Jury selection in the
trial began Monday in Johnson County.
Thompson's trial is expected to last about two weeks. Johnson
County attorney Janet Lyness says she plans to call as many as 20
Police say they believe Versypt was shot once in the head as he worked on one of his properties on Oct. 8, 2009.
A second man, Justin Alexander Marshall, also is charged with first-degree murder in the case.
