Number one in the country, that's what the Iowa Western Community College football program ranks after their 7th straight win this weekend. We take a look inside a unique program. It’s putting Council Bluffs in the spotlight and giving local athletes a shot at moving up.

“It's pretty awesome to have the success we're having this early and it's pretty fun playing here,” said Council Bluffs native Jake Waters. “I came here because I thought I could play at a higher level out of high school.”

He played at St. Albert’s but didn't get recruited because his school was so small. Now, with the team’s success and number one national ranking, he's getting noticed. He’s been offered 5 Division I football scholarships.

“I'm just going to take my visits and see what schools I like that best I guess,” said Waters.

“Anytime you can show these guys some success and they have success in school and on the field I think that's positive,” said Head Coach Scott Strohmeier.

Strohmeier says that was his goal when the program started four years ago.

“I'd like to think that if they come watch a game they see the exciting style of play. That kids are motivated to represent Iowa Western and the City of Council Bluffs in a positive way,” said Strohmeier.

Not to mention the community support they teams gets each Saturday.

“More and more each week you just see the community coming out. It's pretty exciting to see fans come out and support us,” said Defensive Coordinator Mike Blackbourn.

He says that is spreading.

“We try to prepare these kids as much as possible for the next level. Because it's definitely not an easy road once you get there,” said Blackbourn.

The Reivers host Iowa Central Community College this Saturday at 2:30.
