The Des Moines Metro Wastewater Reclamation Facility is offering treated wastewater to area suburbs for landscape watering during the drought.

The wastewater usually goes into the Des Moines River, but the Iowa Natural Resources Department this week approved its use by Des Moines suburbs. The wastewater that's being shared with the suburbs will receive extra chlorination and monitoring.

The facility serves 17 cities and counties in the metro area and treats between 45 million and 60 million gallons of wastewater daily.
