Iowa Looking Closer At Red Light Cameras

Iowa State transportation officials are taking a closer look at the use of traffic cameras, slowing down plans to install the devices in Iowa City.

The City Council in Iowa City approved use of the cameras this year and expected them to be operating by this fall, but state Transportation Department officials are seeking more information about intersections that would be monitored.

Iowa City transportation planner John Yapp says it may be spring before the city can meet state requests for more data about crash history, traffic and speed counts.

State traffic engineer Tim Crouch says as the cameras became more common, the state agency decided it needed a more thorough review process for applications.

State approval isn't required to operate cameras on locally controlled roads.
