There are some problems at Central Park Elementary concerning the principal. For almost a month now, Principal Mary Austin hasn't been at school. Wednesday parents received a note home that a new principal will be taking over.
“I got a note home saying that they are going to have a new principal Dr. Christensen and that they are going to try to make the adjustment as well as possible,” said Brenda Gibler.
Gibler is new to the neighborhood. It’s her second grade son's first year at the school.
“I really don't know what's going on and my student just started here this year, and I met Mrs. Austin and she is a lovely person and she is great with the kids,” said Gibler. “She made the school shine and I’m wondering myself what happened but they said to call the TAC building so I have no idea.”
A spokesperson with Omaha Public Schools said they could not comment on Austin’s employment status. But that the interim principal would be at Central Park for the remainder of the school year.
As for Gibler, she'll continue to support her son and hopes for the best.
“I pray that she's okay, and I pray that her family is okay and whatever is going on I pray that she is well,” said Gibler.
Omaha Education Association president Chris Proulx tonight says he doesn't have any details about Austin’s status, except that it appears to be related to a student discipline matter. For now Cathy Christensen will be principal for the year.
