Improving Busy Highway

The south part of higway 75 Plattsmouth-Bellevue Project considered for first attention if essential funding comes through.

The upcoming session of the Nebraska Legislature will be watched closely as legislation with new funding ideas for road projects is likely to be unveiled.

With the local push for Highway 75 improvements ramping up, state roads department planners summoned Plattsmouth and Cass County government and economic development leaders to a meeting recently. State Department of Roads District 2 Engineer Tim Weander termed it an “internal project meeting.”

The Cassgram reports State Senator Dave Pankonin was among those attending. “I do think the roads department and the state’s executive branch administration are well aware of the need for the project and it is one of their top priorities, but it is a large sum of money and that has to be achieved in policy of some kind.” (Estimates for the project are in the $125 million dollar range.)

When Pankonin addressed a recent Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce gathering, he said there has been talk of bonding (bonds sold that would be repaid over several years) to jumpstart new projects, and the Legislature’s Transportation Committee has also been working on other funding proposals. (Cassgram archives 10/18/10) He said the governor’s support will be instrumental for any new funding bill.
