Major county road plan sails through approval. There were few comments as the Cass County Board of Commissioners adopted the plan as presented.
The One Year Plan (4/1/13 through 3/31/14) includes 28 projects.
The Cassgram reports one of those projects is a new main county maintenance shop. County Roads Superintendent Lenny Thorne just mentioned the shop as he ran through the full project list during the public hearing. Thorne later said the county shop plans will be brought forward as the year progresses.
The One Year Plan also includes the Webster Boulevard overlay. Pavers Inc. of Lincoln has already been awarded the $490,000 contract for the work from the Plattsmouth city limits north to the new paving.
Among other asphalt overlays are 42nd Street by Copper Dollar Cove south to Church Road and west to 54th Street, and a short section of Rock Bluff Road from Highway 75 east. There is asphalt patching listed for Waconda Road but commissioners will look at options next month for more work on that road, said Thorne.
Replacements or repairs on bridges and small structures (short-length bridges) make up about half the projects on the One Year Plan.
Bridge projects make up most of the 11 projects on the Six Year Plan.
---The construction year that is winding down was a notable exception to recent years as all projects on the ’12-13 One Year Plan, with the exception of a couple of bridge projects, were completed. With blizzards and floods in the three years prior to 2012 Thorne said the One Year Plans were hardly even looked at as emergency repairs dictated the work to be done in those years.
