Illegal Landfill Hidden Behind Berm

Omaha city inspectors have uncovered an illegal landfill just blocks from a neighborhood and high school. Its gone unnoticed because of a man made berm that blocks it from view of nearby streets.

Acting on a tip Omaha code inspectors found piles of construction debris dumped without permits near Wenninghoff Road and Sorensen Parkway in Northwest Omaha. Chief Code Inspector Kevin Denker said, "Its truly unbelievable how much stuff we uncovered up there." That not only included concrete chunks but old lumber, drywall and even furniture. Denker said, "God forbid if something would ignite that big pile of construction debris would burn a long time."

A neighbor named Dan lives in view of the berm. He said he had not idea what was behind it and he too worries about a fire, His neighbor named Fred told Fact Finders, "That's the question why are they hiding it."

A branch of the Papio creek runs right beside the berm and the illegal landfill. Papio NRD Manager John Winkler told Fact Finders the berm is a big no, no and doesn't have permits.

The property is owned by Double D properties. Calls left with the management have not been returned.

Part of the debris has been dumped on adjacent lots owned by another company. One of its owners said he's shocked the neighbor would dump on his property.
