Economic expansion plans announced in the Kansas City area are likely to create a ripple effect felt all the way to Omaha and beyond. The popular and successful Swedish furniture maker, IKEA, will open a store at Interstate 35 and Johnson Dr. in Merriam, Kansas. The site is about 8 miles northwest of Overland Park.
IKEA says it will break ground on the project in 2013 with opening set sometime in 2014.
The company expects to draw customers not only from Kansas and Missouri but also several surrounding states including Nebraska, Iowa, and Arkansas.
The nearest IKEA store to Omaha at present is in Minneapolis.
The finished store will have 350,000 square feet with 1,200 parking spots.
