Hunting Among The Dead

You don't have to look far this time of year to see ghosts and goblins hanging around. Usually the displays are reserved for children. The town of Weeping Water, Nebraska is taking Halloween to a new level for adults.

When one walks among the dead, it gives many people the creeps, but not 7-year-old Treva Wright. "It's fun to walk in and it's peaceful and it's nice."

On a crisp evening she has company. Her mother Suzanne and friend Dalton Nickels are also exploring. "We just walk through the cemetery, find interesting stones, interesting names,” said Suzanne.

It would seem more unusual if you didn't know Suzanne Wright's history. "Even when I was a kid I loved just walking around cemeteries and looking at the different stones and I could just imagine the different stories behind all the people there."

In a way, her hobby has been turned into a game for the Weeping Water Valley Association. This is its second annual cemetery scavenger hunt, taking people to eight different cemeteries.

There are clues offered for people to find, like at the Avoca Cemetery where it says, "High atop my stone sits an urn draped with a cloth. My husband, George Washington Harshman Jr. and I were married only two short years before we had to part in 1889. Who am I?”

"You know how long ago 1884 was?" asked Suzanne.

"I dunno, no clue," answered Treva.

"Like, 130-some years ago," said Suzanne.

“Seriously?" said Treva.

Even a certain level of comfort among the graves doesn't guarantee the heart won't skip a beat. There was a hole by one headstone. "Oh my gosh!" The name on the marker read “Frank.”

"Must've been Frankenstein,” said Treva. “His name is Frank!" Apparently it takes more to scare kids these days.

Scavenger hunt winners will be selected on Tuesday and receive prizes at local businesses.
