A jail inmate committed suicide after grabbing a gun and shooting a sheriff's deputy at a northeast Iowa hospital Saturday morning.
The inmate, who's name has not been released, attacked the Fayette County Sheriff's Department deputy around 8:30 a.m. at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union when one of his hands was released from handcuffs.
A struggle ensued and the inmate was able to grab the deputy's gun. The deputy used a non-lethal device on the inmate and the inmate shot the deputy before turning the gun on himself. The deputy was wearing a bulletproof vest and was not seriously hurt.
Hospital CEO Steve Stark said the hospital limited access to some areas, but no services were interrupted.
