Friends and family of LaDontae Daugherty gathered Monday in prayer and remembrance. Daugherty was shot and killed over the weekend.
On 30th street and Ames street, people held signs with Daugherty's photo shouting the message, "Justice of Dontae!"
Family and friends are struggling with the loss.
"How do you explain that to your kids? How do you, how do you tell them, he's not coming back," said Teala Ward, the mother of one of Daugherty's children.
Ward said she’s confused by the entire incident.
"I don't get it,” she said. “I had just spoke to him an hour before it happened. And then all of a sudden, I am asleep and I get a phone call, and I'm rushing back to Omaha, getting here as fast as I can, then waiting and waiting, and then being devastated."
Ward also shared her biggest fears and struggles after this devastating news: telling her child and eventually her unborn child that their father is gone.
"As far as his kids, they are so young. They might not remember. The baby I am having now will never get the chance, ya know what I am saying, to touch her dad, or hear his voice, nothing like that," said Ward.
The family urges anyone with information on this crime to call police.
