Almost three weeks ago an out of control driver smashed through a porch and into the side of another house on the southeast corner of 142nd & L streets in Omaha. Part of the crash was caught on tape. But one homeowner is frustrated that insurance has been slow to settle.
Mary Schafer’s fence, landscaping and porch got smashed before the construction flatbed truck stopped at the house next door.
Mary says, "This is the fifth one in two years."
But this time the driver has insurance. Though Mary says it shouldn't take almost three weeks for Progressive Insurance to take responsibility. Mary says, "They should have had some assurance to all of us that this was going to proceed in a timely manner and repairs would be made."
The owner of the house next door also has repairs to be made.
Walls and window frames show cracks.
Mary's house escaped structural damage but she estimates a cost of 21-hundred dollars for other repairs. The last she hopes after five crashes into her property. She says, " I think if you live here all your life and then you end up having this many, it’s indicative of something."
Like this one, all the crashes happened on bright sunny days so Mary believes the trend of inattentive driving has put her house in harms way.
After Fact Finders contacted Progressive, the insurance company accepted liability on the claim. A spokesman says a delay in interviewing the driver caused the investigation to take longer than expected. But Mary and her neighbors will have repairs covered. That includes a settlement check for Apple Auto which had a used car damaged when the truck first left the street.
According to the police report a witness said the truck driver was slumped over the wheel while entering the intersection. When the truck hit the curb, the driver hit the gas causing the truck to go out of control.
