Hit and Run Causes Injuries

Hit and run driver caught.

One vehicle goes off the highway and lands on its top in a field, the other vehicle flees the scene but the suspected driver is later caught.

The crash just after 6pm Saturday evening brought Plattsmouth EMS, the Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire Department and Cass County sheriff’s deputies to the scene near Highway 66 and 60th Street.

Cass County Sheriff Wm. C. Brueggemann advised a witness told deputies that a car (1999 Chevy Cavalier) was westbound on Highway 66 when a large white Ford F-350 truck, also traveling west but at a high rate of speed, rear-ended the Cavalier and drove off. The car was pushed into the south ditch and then rolled over several times. (picture of the accident scene at www.cassgram.com)

The Cavalier was driven by Lisa Dillon, age 24, Lincoln. Kyle Kalkwarf age 22, Lincoln, was a passenger. Dillon and Kalkwarf were transported to Creighton Medical Center for what the report described as injuries that were not life threatening. Both had been wearing their seatbelts.

Once the two injured individuals were attended to, deputies began looking for the driver of the pickup.

Deputies located a Nebraska license plate in the area of Highway 66 and 72nd Street. The plate was from a 2003 white Ford F-350 truck registered to Lance Burgess, age 22, of Lake WaConDa. Deputies responded to Lake WaConDa but were unable to locate Burgess. Several hours later the Cass County 911 center received information that Burgess and his truck were hiding in a garage in the Lake WaConDa area. Deputies responded and located Burgess.

Burgess admitted to being involved in the accident but downplayed the event, said Brueggemann. Burgess was subsequently arrested and booked for suspicion of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a felony. Other charges are also pending: willful reckless driving and driving without a license. Alcohol is also believed to be a factor in regard to Burgess’ driving, said the sheriff.
