Hit and Run School Bus Proves Elusive

A traffic accident on West Dodge Road last week has turned into a lingering headache for a metro motorist.

Mindy Gierke’s car has more than $1,000 worth of damage and she says the culprit was a school bus.

“Wouldn't you think the bus would have known it had hit someone?” she asked. “And they didn't pull over at all.”

Mindy was westbound on West Dodge last Friday afternoon when a school bus changed lanes and hit a van causing the van to sideswipe her car.

Fact Finders talked to a witness who said he looked in his rear view mirror and saw the school bus clip the van but he didn't get a good look at the name on the side that would tell which bus company or school district.

Mindy and the van driver stopped while the bus drove on.

“There were kids on the bus,” Minday said. “So even if the bus driver somehow didn't know he hit somebody, you'd think maybe these kids would have noticed what's going on or said something.”

The bus left a crease in the van. The van owner’s insurance company will likely be stuck with repair costs for both damaged vehicles.

Mindy hopes someone on the school bus will shed some light on the incident.

Mindy has contacted several transportation companies and school districts in the metro but she’s had no luck identifying the bus.
