High Water Soaks the Heartland

High water is swamping parts of the heartland. All the rain this week has closed some streets in Wahoo.

You could see water running over the road along highway 77, which runs through downtown Wahoo.

Saunders County Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz said this type of situation is what he is concerned about. With water running over the road at night, he’s urging people to avoid driving around road barriers.

Water was gushing out of the spillway of the dam at Lake Wanahoo Thursday. Massive amounts of water from there pour into town.

Residents say it's a new and frightening experience.

Wahoo’s Tiffani Knutson said, "I'm from Omaha originally and I moved out here and I've never seen it this bad before. I've never known it could get this bad here in this small town."

Sheriff Stukenholtz said he has emergency managers monitoring the water levels and if they determine the water is rising too fast, they will talk more seriously about the possibility of evacuations.
