More Cruiser Camera Information:

The cruiser cameras are in all front line cruisers, command cars and marked gang unit vehicles.

The cameras are to be turned on for all traffic stops, citizen contacts, pursuits and whenever lights and or sirens are on. The cameras will also record all transportation of citizens and arrestees.

Technological advances have changed the way we live. Cell phones, personal computers, the way we bank; all have changed dramatically over the past ten years.

Technology is also changing traditional jobs; the Omaha Police department is using advances in technology to help keep us safe.

It's not exactly new technology, just the latest generation cruiser camera system and Omaha Police cruisers have all been outfitted with the new system.

In addition to recording all interactions between police and the pubic the cameras can also help in the day to day work.

Sgt. Harold Scott says, "If you want to get that license plate real quick you could pull it up." Sgt. Harold Scott said, "you can see how far it zooms in, and it goes back automatically after a minute or so."

This recent rescue at Carter Lake was captured by the new system but earlier camera systems have let Omaha Police and the public down. That, according to Mayor Suttle, won't happen again.

"No longer is it just low bid; we're going to be putting out performance specs and in that performance spec is going to be the financials of the companies who will be invited to bid on the products that serve this city." said Mayor Jim Suttle.

The camera system joins the shot spotter already in use. Omaha Police have high hopes the two systems together can better serve the public.

Capt. Scott Gray said, "When a shot spotter indication comes out and gives us coordinates to look for we can activate cruiser cameras as officers respond to the area and they can record anything they see."

And maybe get a picture of a suspect's car officers missed on their way to the scene.
