Our community has eight new heroes. They were honored Tuesday as this year’s DJ’s Hero Scholarship winners.
The awards are given each year by the Salvation Army.
Each of the young people has faced adversity in their life and has prevailed. Now they will move forward with a $10,000 scholarship in recognition of their achievements.
One of the recipients was Rachel Pavelka. After surviving a serious car accident she chose to help others with a business that sells jewelry made by impoverished people in Peru.
Rachel said, “Always give to others because you never know when you are going to meet somebody that is going to impact your life in an amazing way and also you always have to believe in yourself and you always have to do what's best. Integrity and volunteering - those are my two keys to success."
So far, Rachel's project has generated nearly $80,000, all of which goes to the makers of the jewelry.
