Elizabeth Mulkerrin, Ed.D., Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s director of education, was honored with the Promising Professional Award at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) College of Education’s 25th annual Hollie Bethel Distinguished Alumni Luncheon.

The Promising Professional Award, presented on April 17th, recognizes recent UNO College of Education graduates who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and success in their profession within a short period of time. Mulkerrin was one of two alumni who received the award.

“I was very surprised and excited to receive this recognition and honor,” she said. “UNO has been a big part of my life and has opened a lot of doors for me to grow and develop as a professional.”

Mulkerrin earned a Master of Science degree in Educational Administration in 1998 and a Doctor of Education in Educational Administration and Supervision in 2012 from UNO’s College of Education. Her Bachelor of Science degree is from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.

She began her professional career as a biology teacher at Omaha Burke High School. In 2000, she joined Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s education department, taking charge of the Zoo’s educational programs, including the Zoo Academy for high school-aged students. She was also responsible for implementing Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s first all-day kindergarten program in partnership with Bancroft Elementary.

Mulkerrin currently serves as the director of informal science division on the Board of National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and co-authored the publication "Exemplary Science in Informal Education Settings." She also serves on the National Science Education Leadership Board (NSELA), Nebraska National Science Olympiad Council and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Penguin Taxon Advisory Group. In addition, Mulkerrin sits on the Out of School Time Project Liftoff Advisory Committee, and also serves on the Regional Metro Science and Engineering Fair Board.
