Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman says he will not try to intervene in the Legislature's election of new committee leaders.

The Republican governor said Wednesday that the votes to name new committee leaders are an internal matter that should be left to lawmakers once they convene in January.

His comments followed a statement last week from Nebraska Republican Party Chairman Mark Fahleson. Fahleson urged lawmakers to only support conservatives for leadership roles in the officially nonpartisan Legislature, saying Democrats want to destroy Heineman's agenda.

Several committee chairmanships have opened because of legislative term limits, including seats on the budget-writing Appropriations Committee, the tax-focused Revenue Committee, and the Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee.

Heineman says he'll work with whichever lawmakers are chosen for each position.
