Heavy Rain Hits Metro

More Video...

Heavy rain hit the metro at rush hour Friday followed by a number of accidents and the threat of flooding. A Flash Flood Warning was in effect for Douglas County until 7:45.

Lightning Strike

The pictures you see here were shot in Omaha's Elmwood Park. The tree was hit by lightning.

The lightning hit the tree on the south side of the golf course just moments after the accident occurred nearby. The head-on collision on the road that runs through Elmwood Park led to one minor injury and frightening moments for a driver waiting for rescue crews to arrive. Christy Akin said the lightning struck that tree about 50 feet behind her.

She said, "I was talking to my sister on the phone to report the accident. This piece of wood came and hit me and about gave me a heart attack."

No one was hurt.

In addition to the heavy rain, there were scattered reports of small hail.

A storm settled over the metro and parked just before the evening rush began. Water ran out of places to go.

Several incidents of street flooding were reported around Omaha. There were reports of traffic lights malfunctioning.

Stewart Arkin sent us a photo on Facebook shot at 156th and Blondo. You can see two vehicles stuck in high water on the left side of the picture.

The rains fell in widely varying amounts as the flood warning continued into the evening. Some parts of the county were seeing downpours while others saw rain end.

Use caution if you are on the roads.
