Neighbors in the area of 31st and Paxton Boulevard will notice some changes over the next few weeks. The former Gunderson Rail property, purchased by the City is scheduled for demolition beginning this month.
The removal of the buildings and the grading of the property will make way for the Minne Lusa Stormwater Conveyance Sewer which is part of the Clean Solutions for Omaha (CSO) program.
The tunnel will start at the Storz rugby fields and terminate at the property previously owned by Gunderson Rail. When the buildings are demolished and the site cleared, in about April of 2013, the ground will be graded and seeded to create green space.
It will remain as a green space until the tunnel construction begins sometime in 2015.
“This is another example of the work the City of Omaha is doing as part of an unfunded, federal mandate to reduce the sewer back-ups and prevent raw sewage from being released into the Missouri River,” said Marty Grate, Environmental Services Manager for the City of Omaha Public Works department. “We are working hard to maximize the water quality improvements under the mandate and minimize the disruption to businesses and residents.”
