A Federal judge has found an Omaha man guilty of aiming a laser pointer at Abel 1, Omaha's police helicopter.
Michael A. Smith, 30, could get up to five years in prison for the crime.
In the early morning of July 11, 2012, investigators heard a report that a Southwest Airlines flight getting ready to land in Omaha had been struck by someone using a laser pointer.
Omaha's police helicopter had the same thing happen when it responded to the area in question -- northwest Omaha near 152nd Street.
The pilots of Abel 1 were struck by the laser beam as many as six to seven times. The refraction of the beam in the cockpit temporarily blinds them.
A deputy Douglas County Sheriff found Smith in his backyard.
