Sen. Chuck Grassley today asked the President to grant the request made by Gov. Terry Branstad for a declaration of a major disaster in response to damaging winds, tornados, rain accumulation, hail, and thunderstorms beginning on June 26, 2014, through July 7, 2014.
Severe weather on June 26 through July 7 caused significant damage to public infrastructure and private property.
The 22 counties with the most severe damage are Audubon, Black Hawk, Butler, Cedar, Des Moines, Grundy, Hamilton, Hardin, Ida, Iowa, Jackson, Jasper, Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Lee, Linn, Mahaska, Muscatine, Poweshiek, Tama, and Washington.
A presidential declaration of a major disaster is necessary to trigger the release of federal funds for public assistance.
