Strong winds fueled a grass fire in a northeast Nebraska field that forced some residents of Battle Creek to be evacuated Sunday.
Firefighters from Norfolk, Madison and Tilden were battling the blaze near the town of about 1,200 west of Norfolk. Homes on the western edge of Battle Creek were evacuated because of the flames, but it wasn't immediately clear whether any were damaged.
Rev. Richard Snow of St. John Lutheran Church in Battle Creek said it didn't appear that the town was in danger, but it was unsettling to have ashes falling and thick black smoke hanging in the air.
