The Jennie Edmundson Cancer Center in Council Bluffs has received a $1 million grant from the Leona M. and Harry Helmsley Charitable Trust.
The grant matches a $1 million challenge grant from an anonymous donor and will help to purchase a state-of-the-art linear accelerator for Methodist Jennie Edmundson Cancer Center.
The new piece of medical equipment will improve care for many cancer patients living in rural southwest Iowa.
Dr. Lori Platt, a cancer survivor, said, “We are so blessed to have this cancer center here in Iowa where we can touch so many people’s lives by bringing in the technology like this to this small area. Patients don’t have to travel far away to receive top notch cancer treatment.”
The $2 million will help launch a $5 million capital campaign needed to buy the equipment. That campaign will begin in January, 2015.
