Girls Day Out, Building A House

Move over guys, the ladies are rolling up their sleeves and putting hammer to nail on the city's latest Habitat Omaha build.

The experience left them with more than just sore arms from the work. Angie Podoll is used to showing off houses and ready to hand over the keys to someone’s new home. It’s where she does her best work. "We see houses built all the time, which is great."

In fact, Podoll is a house selling pro, working for CBS Home. But things were different at a north Omaha house on Wednesday. For one, it wasn’t for sale. It will be donated and two, "To be able to actually build one with your hands and see it from start to finish is really a rewarding process."

In fact, CBS Home is behind the entire project, working in partnership with Habitat Omaha to help a family of six move in soon. Henry Kommandel of CBS Home said his company committed $100,000 to make sure the project was completed. That also included 160 volunteers, many of whom were women also committed to donating their time, their elbow grease and hard work in helping with the construction.

"It's nice to see the women out here with hard hats on and actually building. We've done the siding, we've done insulation, you name it and we've done it,” Podoll said. Her Pacific Street office committed a group of women to help in the build.

"They get to come out and test their skills and learn new things and I think at the end of the day, all of them leave so much more empowered and ready to take on new challenges,” said Kathy Katt, a senior marketing director with Habitat Omaha.

The home will be dedicated on December 6th. CBS Home is about $10,000 away from reaching its fundraising goal.
