An Omaha teenager will hand over a $1,200 check Friday afternoon to the American Red Cross for flood victims.
Mariah Kohrt, 13, saw the devastation and homelessness the Missouri River flooding created this summer and she wanted to help. She thought, "I don't know what to do. I can't sandbag because I can't lift that much -- plus I'm not old enough anyway."
She wasn't discouraged. The American Red Cross came up with a different idea.
Mariah Kohrt decided to have a rummage sale to raise money for flood clean-up kits. Fellow girl scouts from Troop 1362 offered items for sale and Baker's Supermarket at 120th and Center offered their parking lot.
In one day, she raised close to $1,000. And in a rare move for a rummage sale, none of the items had a price tag. It was up to the customer to set the fair price.
"Most adults won't look someone in the eye and for something they think is worth $50 and only pay $5," said Mariah.
They raised another $200 in a raffle for items donated by Westwood Plaza businesses.
It's enough, she says, to buy flood clean-up kits for 24-families.
