Anyone who has used crutches knows all about the pain. Not the pain from the broken arm or broken leg, but the pain that comes from the armpits. Last year, Maddi Swanson experienced this first hand. She sprained her ankle. After only a few days, she came up with an idea to make crutches more comfortable and stylish.
She invented Cozy Crutches. Using her own sewing machine, she designs and creates extra padding for crutches. Her inventive thought came just in time. Maddi broke her leg in three places this past winter. After spending two months in a wheelchair, she graduated to crutches for the second time in a year. She says her invention passed with flying colors.
Maddi has no plan to turn her idea into a business. Instead, she makes Cozy Crutches at home and then shares them with other children who might need them. On Tuesday, she visited Children’s Hospital and Medical Center to donate dozens of Cozy Crutches.
She also offers the children a brochure that includes some tips on how they can feel better. They can also email her with questions. Maddi credits her school’s Invention Fair that inspired her to think of her invention.
