A 13-year-old Omaha girl was seriously injured after being struck by a car Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses said Malisa Smith walked into the street at North 30th and Laurel Avenue in front of an oncoming southbound car around 1:45 p.m. The driver tried to swerve, but hit her on the passenger side.

Malisa's mother, Hazel Ranson, tells WOWT 6 News getting that phone call was the scariest moment of her life.

"It was her best friends mother saying that Maylisa has just been hit. I was like, 'Hit by what?' She was like, 'A car, you need to get here," said Ranson.

From Lincoln, Ranson rushed to Alegent Creighton Medical Center where Malisa was being treated. She recalls their first moments together, "She was still kind of in shock. She said, 'I thought I was dreaming mom.' I said, 'No you are not dreaming, this is real.' She said, 'My leg really hurts mom.' I said, 'I know it does baby.'"

Malisa fractured her pelvis bone, a bone in her leg and her nose.

Police continue to investigate the crash, but confirm the driver is not at fault. The light was green which gives the driver the right of way.

Witnesses also said Smith narrowly missed being hit by another southbound vehicle minutes before the collision that scared the driver in front of the car. “I was shook up, I don't know, it was sad and I just was thinking that could have been one of my babies,” said Tara Harrison.

Smith suffered facial and pelvic injuries and is expected to recover.
