A female giraffe born at the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium March 16th has been named. The zoo held a naming contest for several weeks in the spring. The winning name was Bailey.
A 5-year old girl named Ava Aerni won the contest. The prize includes a special zoo-themed gift bag, a behind-the-scenes-tour and a stuffed animal.
The zoo said visitors submitted 9,240 name ideas during the contest, which ran March 30th through April 15th.
Bailey was one of two giraffes born at the zoo in March. The other baby giraffe, which was also a female, died a month after it was born.
