Gay Marriage Debate

While the U.S. Supreme Court weighs the merits of the Defense of Marriage Act people right here in the Heartland are keeping a close eye on the high court.

Those for and against gay marriage are both well represented here in the Heartland.

Amber Parker's book, "God Made Dad & Mom" came to her one morning so perfectly formed she had trouble writing fast enough to keep up with the images in her head.

Amber Parker says, "I do believe that many Americans are for marriage between one man and one woman."

The story centers around Michael and his question to his father about a friend's two dads. Amber says the most important part of her book is for children to understand there is a plan.

Amber Parker says, "A plan for families and a plan for his life and how much Jesus loves him and not only Michael but Jimmy and his two dads too and that there is no sin too big for God to forgive."

Pastor Tom Emmett agrees with part of what Amber is saying but as the head of Omaha's largest all inclusive church he feels same sex marriage is a civil and moral right.

Pastor Tom Emmett says, "I've married hundreds of same sex couples in Iowa."

Metropolitan Community Church's congregation is growing, much like the polls indicate more support for gay marriage. Pastor Emmett feels nationwide recognition of the unions is inevitable.

Pastor Tom Emmett says, "I believe in the good of human beings and I believe in the good of people and the good of our democracy and I think we are just finally seeing people make the right decision based on their beliefs in an all loving God."

Amber Parker sees family in a more traditional light and believes public opinion will change if the high court supports gay marriage.
