We could see the Missouri River rise about 2.6 feet by Friday in Omaha and Council Bluffs. It will be the result of a test being planned Tuesday at Gavins Point Dam on the Nebraska-South Dakota border.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to boost the water flow from 14,000 cubic feet per second to as much as 40,000 cfs for short periods of time.
This is being dong to test the concrete spillway below the dam. Those in Yankton, South Dakota who are much closer to the dam than those in the Omaha metro area will see the river rise more than four feet as a result.
The concrete spillway took a beating during the spring and summer months of 2011. Unprecedented flooding upstream required the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to release water at a rate of160,000 cfs for a sustained period of time.
