It was back in mid-January that a major fire broke out at the General Manufacturing Warehouse in Carter Lake.
Mark Fischer, the owner, remembers every detail. "It was nuts. I received a phone call from one of my team members, and he asked me if the place was on fire, and I said I certainly did not think so."
Unfortunately, Fischer found he was wrong.
Crews from Carter Lake, Council Bluffs, and Omaha fought the fire at the warehouse off North 5th Street and Avenue K, but weren't able to save it.
However now, the company is back in business, making furniture once again.
With a lot of hard work, the company made it to a temporary location at a warehouse at North 9th and Abbott Drive in Omaha.
It's at 70% capacity in the new space and key employees like Larry Swotek get to keep working. "It's huge, especially, say with like the economy being bad sometimes you know, and to keep your job, it's pretty good," he says.
After so much devastation, Fischer is happy the company landed on its feet. "We feel good. We feel good about the progress. We feel good that nobody was injured, number one, and yeah, just thankful we're still in business and people are back to work," Fischer says.
General Manufacturing is leasing the new location for a year.
It's hoping after that time, it can relocate back to Carter Lake.
