Full Wolf Moon Over Heartland

A "Full Wolf Moon" rose around 5:30 p.m. Saturday and sets at 7 a.m. Sunday. The moon should be visible at least before 10 p.m. Saturday, before clouds thicken.

Full moon names date back to Native Americans in what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred.

Full Wolf Moon was selected for January when it was cold and the snow was often deep. It got the name because of the wolf packs which used to howl hungrily outside Indian villages. This information was provided by the Farmer's Almanac.
