Friends Remember Det. Kerrie Orozco

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT 6 News) - Omaha Police Det. Kerrie Orozco and a suspect were shot and killed after a confrontation Wednesday. Details about the incident continue to develop, here.

The passing of Det. Kerrie Orozco brings tears to the eyes of almost everyone who knew her.

"She was a friend. A popular officer. A top notch person. And I just cant imagine that this has even happened but Officer Orozco was a top notch individual and the city of Omaha owes hers a debt of gratitude, and her family, like no other," said Chief Todd Schmaderer, Omaha Police Department.

It also brings stories.

"We are at the game, we are the only dugout with 25, 30 kids. And she finds a way to let all them kids play, while I'm saying 'Kerrie, this kid hasn't been to practice, this kid...' And she's like, 'They'll play, they'll play," said Abduhl Muhammed, Omaha Boys & Girls Club.

Muhammed smiles as he recalls stories of Orozco volunteering as the baseball coach for the last five years at the Omaha Boys & Girls Club.

Plain and simple, Det. Orozco loved her job, family and community.

"When I see kids in the neighborhoods playing out in the streets, I will tell them, 'Hey, how old are you, hey cool you are nine, you can join our baseball team," said Det. Kerrie Orozco, in a video posted by Omaha Police Department. "A lot of it is changing the mind of these kids that what they see is cool, isn't as cool as being responsible, isn't as cool going to school and getting good grades."

Along with her community and co-workers, Det. Orozco is also a wife, daughter, sister, stepmother and recently gave birth to her first child. A little girl named Olivia Ruth was born per-mature just two months ago. Det. Orozco was supposed to start maternity leave Thursday, the day after she was shot and killed.

"To know that that little baby is going to miss this special woman, it really hurts my heart," said Muhammed.

Friends all said, Det. Orozco is a person no one can replace and a person no one will ever forget.

"All of us, we will carry a piece of Coach K with us, because that is the kind of person she was," said Tom Kunkel, Omaha Boys & Girls Club.

A makeshift memorial for Officer Orozco has been started outside Omaha Police Headquarters at South 15th and Howard streets.
