A former U.S. poet laureate will read some of his work at the Homestead National Monument in January.
Ted Kooser will read from his "Blizzard Voices" poetry book at 1 p.m. on January 13th. The book focuses on the storm that hit the Great Plains in January 1888. Also on that day, a panel of family members will tell stories of people who survived the storm.
Nebraska state climatologist Al Dutcher will talk about the storm that created so much destruction with little warning.
On January 12th, a related activity for children is planned. A former first-grade teacher will read "The Schoolchildren's Blizzard" that recounts the story of a teacher who kept her students safe during the storm.
