Former Bellevue Police Chief Faces Jury Trial
The former Bellevue Police Chief, John Stacey, has lost the battle to have misdemeanor gun charges against him thrown out.
The case will now go in front of a jury trial. Stacey’s attorney, James Martin Davis, maintains that the former police chief didn't think he was doing anything wrong by loaning a gun to Gretna's former city administrator Colleen Lawry.
Stacey says he wasn't transferring ownership of the gun to Lawry, he was just loaning it to her.
Stacey insists the charges are unfair and he'll continue the fight. He tells Channel Six he wants to get the trial over with and protect others from dealing with Nebraska’s unclear handgun law.
“Had it not been me I think they could have picked any law enforcement officers in this state because they all loan guns, everyone I know has loaned guns,” says Stacey.
It will be December or January before Stacey's trial takes place. Attorney Davis says there is no chance of a plea deal.
