A former employee of the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York is recovering after shooting herself at the facility Sunday afternoon.
Staff recognized 50-year-old Robin Staehr of York when she walked into the lobby around 5:15 p.m. as an ex-employee who resigned in 2005. She had a rifle behind her back and demanded to be allowed into the center. When denied access, Staehr fired a single gunshot to her chin before dropping the gun and walking out of the building.
Staff called 911 and began procedures to clear the yard and lock down the facility. Emergency responders arrived and took Staehr to York General Hospital. She was later transferred to BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln.
The incident remains under investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol and once reports are completed they will be forwarded to the York County Attorney for review and determination of possible charges.
