A local food bank has a new way to feed those in need. The Kiewit Building Group installed a greenhouse outside of the Food Bank of the Heartland at 10th and J streets on Saturday.
They'll now be able to grown vegetables, herbs and plants 12 months of the year by using solar power and heaters. The Food Bank of the Heartland is grateful for anything donated as it is trying to improve the nutrition level of the food.
“We have a lot of friends that are gardeners that want to help us and give us advice, but mostly it's fresh produce for the people that we serve who many times have a hard time affording it,” said Food Bank CEO Susan Ogborn.
The greenhouse will be up and running soon and its size can be doubled if it becomes a success.
