Food Truck Debut Provides Meals for Homeless

The smell of burgers filled the air around the Open Door Mission Tuesday afternoon.

Hy-Vee debuted its first food truck there. With 1,000 meals served up to homeless, organizers say it's a way to give back.

Hy-Vee’s Tarci Slaybaugh said, “This was the first thing we wanted to do: feed the homeless. This is our first big event. We've had it for two weeks. We've been practicing in front the store."

The Open Door Mission’s Steve Frazee said, “This makes a big difference for our folks. It makes them feel extra special just being able to have a picnic."

The Open Door Mission will have a bigger celebration on August 16th when they host the block party.
