Food Pantries In Need

For the last 15 years, an Omaha charity has passed out food every Tuesday and Thursday. But now they are cutting back to just one day.

Brigit Elliott doesn't need to shop at the Saint Vincent de Paul thrift store in south Omaha, but she does for many reasons. "Personally, I think you get fabulous, fabulous deals and I'm all about getting the deals."

Shopping there makes those deals a little bit sweeter. "You're helping to support local community and community is just very, very important."

Dan Detches is the general manager there. He believes if more people thought like Elliott, there would be more clothes on the racks. "It's everything, it's not just clothes, which is our biggest seller, but it is also household goods, furniture and even food to our food pantry."

Boxes in the shelves typically filled with food sit empty. Many shelves are completely bare and a refrigerator is completely empty. And because there's nothing to give out, the organization has been forced to turn people away, cutting their pantry days down to just one day a week.

"There's a lot of people out there that really could use the food pantry and stuff and to cut it off like that it's tough for us to do, to see that happen, but we have no choice at this time," Detches said. He's prayerful things will pick up.

Elliott is as well. "Aren't we suppose to do unto others as you would have others do unto yourself? And to look at others in a way that God would look at them, that would be to take care of them and do all that we can do as as human beings."

When Detches has to turn people away, he refers them to other food pantries and local churches. Unfortunately, many of those outlets are low in supplies as well.
