A food fight breaks out at Gretna High School and now dozens of students are facing disciplinary action. Some students say it was all in good fun, but administrators say that's not the case.
Cell phone video showed the chaotic scene Friday afternoon at Gretna High School's cafeteria. Senior Angela Waddell says one student yelled "food fight," then she along with dozens of others instantly reacted. "The first thing I did was I picked up the closest food item and just chucked it across the room."
Senior Noah Klimm says once he saw what was going on, he too joined in. "Pie goes flying everywhere. Marinara sauce comes over, I got covered with the marinara sauce. Then that's when I was just like, I might as well start throwing stuff too."
Angela says a group of students planned the so called "senior prank" the day before. She says administrators heard about it and warned students that day.
She says many of the students involved are facing several days of in-school suspension. The instigators are facing up to 19 days. Also, some involved aren't allowed at prom.
Angela believes administrators are being too harsh. "It was just kind of a joke. I think they took it too seriously."
School administrators say this was serious and it's important for them to maintain a safe learning environment for all students. That's why some students like Amanda Gekas didn't participate. "I knew that they were probably going to get into trouble and I just didn't want to be suspended for something kind of ridiculous."
It also created a big mess inside the newer building and administrators say it could have been a liabilty issue if someone would have gotten hurt.
