Florence Residents Enjoy Coffee With A Cop

Florence residents spent a portion of the morning Tuesday with Omaha police officers. There were no protests and no one received a ticket, just good conversation and a cup of coffee.

"We want to connect with the community," said Lt. Mike McGee. "We realize we need to step out of our cruisers, get out of our building, and come to where the community is and reach out to them."

Coffee with a Cop is a chance for police to get together with the people they protect and show them they are more than just a uniform and a badge.

McGee said, "To let them know we’re human beings, we have lives outside of our jobs, we mow the lawns, we have kids we go to ballgames."

Florence resident Noah Sterba said, "Its nice to talk to a cop in a more personal setting and I’m not in trouble."

The goal of Coffee with a Cop is to begin a dialogue that can be helpful, to both sides, in the future.

"It’s a good thing for the community to know the folks that they have in their neighborhood, so that when something does happen it's not a stranger you’re trying to relate with," said resident Talage Baltimore.

Omaha police have held several other Coffee with a Cop events throughout the metro area.
