A race in the southern part of the metro has gotten expensive with more than $100,000 expected to be spent by Election Day. District 45 is a battle between first-time politicians.
Richard Carter has an Air Force background. “It was really my military experience that made me want to get involved in politics. When I was serving overseas I realized the importance of having good leaders in the public sector as well. So I said when I get out I want to continue serving, but in a different way.”

His opponent, Sue Crawford, is an educator. “I've been teaching at Creighton University, that's what brought us here. So my education background is in political science and public policy and that background really stresses the importance of making sure policies work well on the ground."
Crawford says the biggest issues she hears from voters are property taxes and retiree taxes. She created an advisory council with members from both parties to help guide her. “I feel confident that I can build bridges between parties as well as between the rural and urban divide."
Carter, who is supported by the governor, wants to phase out income taxes on pensions as one way to keep those who retire from the state's biggest employer, Offutt Air Force Base, in Nebraska. "I'm a hawk against tax increases, so I pretty much oppose any tax increase across the board."
One thing is certain. The person who takes over for Abbie Cornett, will hit the ground running.
