A two alarm fire Sunday morning caused hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage to two Omaha businesses and the apartments above them.
The fire near North 83rd and Blondo was reported around 10 a.m. A second alarm was called just after 11 a.m. It took more than an hour to bring the blaze under control.
According to firefighters, the blaze started in Treasure Mart Collectibles, then spread through a concealed pipe chase. It caused more than $300,000 worth of damage to the attic space and roof of the building. On Monday, the building was declared a total loss.
Treasure Mart Collectibles shares the building with Dragon's Lair Comics and Games. "It's really unfortunate about this incident and you know, we've been in the store since 1976," said Dragon's Lair employee Tom Miller. "We are just very fortunate that from what we know no one was injured, everyone was out okay."
Six people, who live in the apartments above the businesses, were able to escape safely. A firefighter was taken to the hospital for a knee injury; he was treated and released.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
