A firearm was confiscated from a student at Omaha Benson High School Thursday. There were no threats made and no one was injured.
The school sent a message to parents and guardians informing them of the incident. OPS reissued that notice to serve as the district’s formal statement on the matter. The text of that follows:
Dear Benson High School Magnet Families:
I feel that it is important to inform you of an incident that occurred at school today—Thursday, May 8th.
Today, a Benson student was found to be in possession of a firearm on school property. The School Resource Officer confiscated the weapon and police were immediately notified. Police arrived, took the firearm, and made an arrest.
No shots were fired. No threats were made. No one was hurt.
We want to emphasize that the safety of Benson High School Magnet students, faculty, and staff was maintained throughout the situation.
It is because of the close relationships building staff have formed with students, parents, and the community regarding the importance of safety in our building that we were able to respond to this situation appropriately and immediately.
We are a family here at Benson – and we appreciate your continued efforts to help us maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all students.
