A fire at the historic Mercer Mansion in Omaha Saturday afternoon was confined to one apartment. No one was hurt.

It took about 15 minutes to extinguish the flames in the second-floor unit of the building near North 39th and Cuming streets after firefighters arrived just after 2 p.m. The resident wasn't home at the time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

"The concern also was maybe that it started in the basement, the older buildings like this it's easy for it to start there and extend up through the walls to there, but nothing was found," said OFD Battalion Chief Matt Carmichael.

The home was built in 1885. Dr. Samuel Mercer was chief surgeon of the Union Pacific Railroad and founder of Omaha's first hospital.
