Finding A Reasonably Priced Halloween Costume

Nine days until Halloween and many parents are still trying to find a creative costume for the kids or themselves.

The trick is finding one at a good price.

But there is one place we may not think to look.

Sharon Griffin is shopping for a Halloween costume...for herself.

Sharon is a student at Metro Community College and her math instructor has a reward for those dressing up for Halloween.

"She would add four points to my grade," Sharon said.

Sharon doesn't need the extra credit, but she enjoys dressing up and hopes to do so for a reasonable price.

That's why she's checking out the Goodwill Store at 72nd and Ames Avenue.

"I am surprised at what I've seen, actually I see quite a selection...some rather risqué and some a little more maybe tame," Sharon said.

Jacy Riedmann is also shopping for costumes here for several of her co-workers.

"I'm just trying to find something fun and crazy," she said.

Jacy was selected for the task due to her creativity.

"Last year I took a trash can and cut the bottom out and went as Oscar the Grouch and won all the awards, so I think that's why I got put in charge," she said.

Jacy knows she can stretch her dollar by shopping here.

"I found some really cool stuff already," she said. "This is my third Goodwill that I've been to."

Kay Hilgenkamp of Goodwill says prices are low usually just a few dollars because the costumes are recycled.

"Think of all the moms out there that this year it's not going to fit them next year so rather than store it, they put it in with their donations they bring to Goodwill," Hilgenkamp said.

Meanwhile, Sharon Griffin is still looking.

"I don't want to get as my son would say...under arrested," she said with a hearty laugh.

All of the Goodwill outlets have racks of costumes and plenty of opportunities to let our imagination soar by mixing and matching for everyday items.
